Encourage Your Kids to Go Green with Capri Sun and TerraCycle – GIVEAWAY!

April 21st, 2009 · Posted By: Emily

Congratulations to Allison, our winner!
********

In honor of Earth Day (April 22nd) and their commitment to promoting a greener planet, Capri Sun is encouraging kids and parents to start Drink Pouch Brigades in their community. The program not only reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills, but it teaches kids the importance of being environmentally conscious and preserving the Earth’s resources – a lesson I think we all want our kids to learn!

Capri Sun and TerraCycle, a company who has pioneered the concept that any material can be reused and made into something of value, have teamed up to create the Drink Pouch Brigades. The free collection program allows kids, parents and teachers to work together to eliminate waste by collecting used Capri Sun and other drink pouches to raise extra funds for their local schools, churches and community groups.

Here are a few quick facts about the program:
– Each year, billions of drink pouches are sent to dumpsters and landfills across the U.S.,
–There are currently over 14,500 participating Drink Pouch Brigade locations in the U.S.,
– For every juice pouch collected and sent in, TerraCycledonates 2 cents back to the community,
– The used drink pouches are then repurposed into cool and fashionable accessories such as pencil cases, folders, tote bags and book bags.
– To date, more than $25,000 has been donated to schools and community programs nationwide and more than one million pouches have been saved from landfills.

Look how cool this stuff is!

You can win it!

Thanks to Capri Sun and TerraCycle, we’re giving away a backpack, folder and pencil case like the ones shown above. Fun and eco-friendly products for your kids to take to school!

To enter, leave a comment on this post telling us what green things you’re doing on Earth Day or in your every day life. For extra entries, tweet about this contest on Twitter or subscribe to our feed and leave comments telling us you’ve done so. We’ll use random.org to pick a winner on April 29th.

Good luck!

  16. The Watson Family says:

We compost all fruit, veggie scraps and the like, belong to a local CSA, and have our own organic vegetables – we blanch, can, freeze and do not have to buy any veggies in the winter. We recycle and reuse many many items, use cloth napkins and towels, cloth bags, etc.

This is such a wonderful idea – thank you Terracycle!

  17. Jess Ross says:

Our family uses a filtered water pitcher, reusable lunch bags and cloth shopping bags.

  18. Liz C says:

Turning off all lights and air-conditioning for the whole day in our classroom.

  19. Lisa Imerman says:

We are avid recyclers, we buy mostly local and all organically grown foods and we use CFL lightbulbs, we compost, use waste-free lunch boxes and water bottles. We belong to a CSA for produce and do as much as we can for our family and environment.

We started the drink pouch brigade at our school and my son did a project about being green for school and as part of that wrote a book to share with other classes.

  20. Suzanne Robertson says:

My family recycles bottles, cans, plastic, cardboard. We use recyclable bags at the grocery. This year for earth day we will drop off our recyclables at our local college.

  23. Jeanette M says:

new year’s resolution! reusable bags, water bottles, composting and I even pick recycling & compost out of the garbage now!! We’ve got to get more people on board, your company is an ingenius method.

  24. Amanda Smith says:

Our school is participating in both the drink pouch and chip bag collections. We love it. One student actually has a Kool-aid pouch pencil case that he purchased at the beginning of the school year. For Earth day, each grade level in our school chose a common household item to recycle and use in a new way. The 4th grade took orange juice and milk containers and turned them into bird feeders to hand around the outside of the school. We also collect and recycle plastic bottle caps with the Aveda company since they do not get recycled in regular recycling facilities. Thanks for all you do!

  25. justine says:

We have signed up for the brigades at Terracycle.net at our school and our girl scout troop. It’s nice to know that creative minds are keeping things from the landfill and that they are making such COOL things from them! Earth Day was spent at the environmental center where we collected many drink pouches.

  26. Jennifer Gonzales says:

We are avid recyclers and composters! We use reusable shopping bags, cold laundry setting, have a drought-tolerant garden, and send our juice pouches to TerraCycle for our school!!!

  27. Tam D says:

I recycle the microwaveable CB kids meals containers and tops by using them to start my garden seeds. They make excellent mini greenhouses! I also save the plastic cupcake containers and yogurt cups that my students bring in at lunch time to plant seeds in.
    :)

  28. Kim Burton says:

We recycle, spread the word and try to teach others to do it as well – not always an easy task. Someone actually said to me, “what’s the point?” – we got lots of work to do!

We use recycle totes w/cute pics as gift bags and I’ve noticed they are being used by the receiver as well. It’s a start at least.

Thank you for the juice brigade – my kids will be thrilled – perfect timing for summer camps.

  29. Emily says:

We are always expanding our efforts to live a low impact lifestyle (and we have a long way to go!)

We turn off the water while lathering our hands and brushing our teeth. We use only green cleaning products, including laundry detergent. I’m working on transitioning to more green health and beauty aids. We do some recycling (and I’m working on doing even more). I am using my purchasing power to vote on greener products whenever possible.

I’d love to have that backpack for my son to use at preschool! I was trying to figure out how to buy it from Terracycle’s website but I guess they don’t sell their products online.

    Cheers, Emily

I am never going to use a plastic shopping bag again and I am planning to pressure local businesses to start charging for plastic bag use at the grocery store. WE can all get out of the “plastic bag habit” with a little prodding.

  35. Trisha says:

I am a subscriber, too! My kids love to save their Capri Suns and they recycle pop cans.

I also ALWAYS use my green grocery bags!

  36. adrian pok says:

  37. Hey–I haven’t gotten this. I’m not sure if you sent it or not, so I thought I’d let you know. :) That way you can go after the postman, or you can just yell at me to be a bit more patient, since I don’t have human anklebiters running around. :)
